Plans

Do you have a plan for your life?  What is it?

Have you written it down?

There is AMAZING POWER when you take pen in hand and write out your plans!  There is this almost magical thing that happens when you write things down.  For some reason, when you write down your plans, there is a much greater chance that the plan will actually be accomplished!

I have heard an old Chinese proverb once that said, "The faintest ink is sharper and longer-lasting than the brightest mind."

Isn't that the truth?!  I have had many occasions where I wrote out my plans on paper and accomplished the goals.  I have had many more occasions where I did not write out my plans ==> The plans rarely were accomplished.

You see, we get way too busy to continuously remember our plans and dreams.  We are busy running from the kid's basketball game to go to church.  Then we run from there to go to dinner with friends.  From there we run over to school for the event there.  In the midst of all of our activity, we can lose sight of our hopes/dreams/plans for the future.

That is why it is so important to write out your plans!  It will be a constant reminder of "why" you are doing what you are doing right now.

Why not take the time right now to write out your plans?  Remember what is at stake!  The achievement of your hopes and dreams.  It is worth the time!  You can take five minutes right now and those five minutes could change your life FOREVER!

Sunday

Today, I was able to travel over to Easley, SC and speak at 5 Point Fellowship.

I was able to continue my crusade to help people achieve financial freedom!  Every single time that I teach the practical tools that Jenn and I used to achieve financial freedom, I get PUMPED up!!!

Why do I get PUMPED up?

Because I KNOW that others can do this!  Because I KNOW that all we have to tell ourselves is NO!  Because I KNOW that God has a specific plan and purpose for every single person on this planet and finances many times prevent people from pursuing that specific purpose.  Because I KNOW what it has done for Jenn and I!!!!!

I can't say enough on how thankful I am to Dean Herman, Tim Winkler, and the entire 5 Point Fellowship family for allowing me to come and share my passion with the church.  THANK YOU!

Speaking Event – Sunday, January 7th!

Sunday morning, 1/7, I will be speaking at 5 Point Fellowship in Easley, SC at 10:05AM.

I will also be speaking at 5 Point Fellowship on Sunday evening at 6:00pm.  I will be teaching the Financial Learning Experience class that evening!

I can't wait to visit 5 Point Fellowship tomorrow!

How do I sustain my budget?

Behind the question "How do I put together a budget that actually works?", the most popular question is, "How do I actually keep doing this every single day?"

"How do I actually keep doing this every single day?"

Great question!

Dave Ramsey has said it this way => "When the pain of same is greater than the pain of change."

I believe that the number one thing that will keep you "doing this" for the long-haul is a written plan for your life that uses your God-given passions, skills, and abilities.  If you are motivated, then you will be WAY less likely to blow up your budget in a horrible fit of "I-want-this-now-itis"!  Your life plan will motivate you!

Part of my life's plan was to be able to go do this personal finance thing full-time.  Now, Jenn and I knew that this would require substantial modifications to our lifestyle and budget.  Guess what?  We did it!  We changed our financial behavior FOUR YEARS before we finally embarked on this dream of working with people and their finances full-time.  This dream motivated us.  It helped guide most of our decisions.  It kept us in the game and focused on the prize at the end..

Now, we are living the dream.  It is awesome!  We are PUMPED up to be here!

So guess what?  It is time to write out the next phase of our life plan.  We will ensure that it uses our God-given passions, skills, and abilities.  We will ensure that the things we are doing NOW will be preparing us for those things we embark on THEN.

Have a plan for your life, and let your dreams put wind in your sails to keep up with this budget month-after-month-after-month.

You can do this!

Who are your friends?

Friends are great.  They cause you to go do things you would not otherwise do.  They challenge you when they believe are wrong.  They pick you up when you fail.  Friends focus on making you get involved.  Friends call all of your bluffs.

Friends have a heavy influence on our lives.  As a result, we need to choose our friends wisely.

If you are hanging out with a group of friends that are financially irresponsible and spend absolutely everything they make plus some more, you can be swayed toward doing the same thing.  Why?  Because the things they are spending their money on are fun!  A new car, awesome vacations, new electronics, awesome furniture ...  All of these things are FUN!  However, if they are being bought with Capital One or at the expense of putting money away for KNOWN upcoming expenses like college, retirement, weddings, car replacement, property taxes ..., then something is out of line!

Who are your friends?  Influence them to manage their money in a way that will help them win too!  Challenge them to consider the long-term impact of their decisions.  Consider taking a financial class together (not a get-rich-quick scheme like "no money down, cash out all the equity" real estate).

A class like Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University" is a great place to start.  If you are at NewSpring Church in Anderson, SC, you can sign up for our Financial Freedom classes.  The cost is $20, and the course is 5 weeks long.  If you want more information, send me a note here.

Plans

Do you have a plan for your finances in 2007?

Why not?

QUESTIONS

  • Would you have surgery performed by a doctor who did not have a plan?
  • Would you build a house without a set of plans?
  • Would you take a vacation without a plan?
  • Would you go to war without a plan?

It won't take long, and you will not regret it!  When you write down your goals, the chances are increased 100-fold that you will achieve them.

Why not take the time right now to meet with your spouse and develop a written plan for your finances in 2007.

In the spirit of your taking the major step to write down a plan for your 2007 finances, here is a list of questions you may want to consider.

  • Do you have any major repairs coming up for your house or vehicles?  How much will it cost?
  • When are you going on vacation?  How much will it cost?
  • Are there any major events occurring in 2007 that will cost money?  Weddings/Birthdays/Anniversary
  • How much do you want to spend on 2007 Christmas?  Divide the number by 12 and start saving now!
  • Are you getting a tax refund?  If so, write down a plan on paper that details how/when/where it will be spent/saved/given.
  • Are your children going to college?  How much have you saved, and how much will you need?
  • Can you bump up your contributions to your retirement savings?
  • Can you bump up your giving to worthy causes that you fiercely believe in?
  • Are you budgeting all of your spending on paper before the month begins and making your money obey the INCOME - OUTGO = EXACTLY ZERO formula?

Hopefully these questions will assist you as you develop a plan to win with your money in 2007!

I personally can't wait to see what is going to happen in 2007!

Paid-for Christmas!

Over the holidays, I have had numerous individuals tell me that they paid cash for all of their Christmas presents this year!

WOW!  What a huge step toward achieving financial freedom!

By paying cash for all of their Christmas spending, they are now able to utilize their tax refunds to reduce other debt, build an emergency buffer of cash, or pay cash for other upcoming expenses.  They have eliminated the stress of carrying debt from Christmas into the new year.

Paying cash for items when they are purchased is a sign of a huge change!  To those who paid cash for all of your Christmas spending for the 1st time ever, I salute you!  To those who did not pay cash for all of your Christmas spending, you have a full 12 months to save up for the upcoming Christmas.  Remember, Christmas is in December EVERY SINGLE YEAR!

While you are at it, why not start saving up for the other non-monthly expenses like property taxes, quarterly insurance premiums, or health-club memberships?

You can do it!  Hearing the successes of others PUMPS ME UP and makes me know even more so that YOU can do this too!

Welcome to a year of becoming and staying debt-free!
