How Do I Actually FOLLOW The Budget?

One of the most common questions we receive is:

“Joe, I know how to prepare a budget.   We just can’t find a way to stick to the budget.”

So …   My question to those of you who ARE following the budget you prepare each month is:

What advice would you give this person?   How do you ensure that you follow your budget?

Two Words Many Can Apply To Bad Financial Management

Pastor Daniel Floyd and Pastor Jeremy Pickwell of Lifepoint Church in Fredericksburg, VA introduced me to an old MadTV video that AB-SO-LUTE-LY applies to poor financial management.

There are just TWO WORDS that need to be applied …       Watch the video to discover these two magic words.

SUCCESS STORY: Lower Car and Home Insurance!

A participant in the Financial Learning Experience wrote me to tell us how much they saved by shopping their car and home insurance!   You can too – just click HERE to get quotes from tons of agents in your area!
====================================================================
My husband and I have had [Insert Big Insurer Here] for 33+ years!   My husband was already with [Big Insurer]when we married in the 1970′s, so I just changed my insurance over with his.   We had never had any problems with them and since they were local, we had come to know them personally.
After hearing you say that everyone should shop around for insurance premiums at least every two years, I decided to do just that.   I called our insurance company to get some quotes and explained to them that I had been advised to shop around for the best rates.   My agency just said, well you have many discounts with us, including over 10+ years accident free (I now think of all the money I could have saved while being accident free during those 10+ years!).
There was no offer to even “look” at our policies to see if they could make any adjustments to give us better rates. There was only  the sound of “confidence,” the confidence that says, “someone who had been with  us for 33+ years will not change.”
YOOHOO………THANKS TO YOU FOR THE CHANGE THAT DID TAKE PLACE!!!!!!

Here is a breakdown:
AUTO INSURANCE
  • Vehicle 1       [WAS: Big Insurer] = $723.96         [IS:   New Big Insurer] = $415             Savings/year: $308.96
  • Vehicle2         [WAS: Big Insurer] = $470.52         [IS:   New Big Insurer] = $281             Savings/year: $189.52
  • Vehicle 3       [WAS: Big Insurer] = $370.46         [IS:   New Big Insurer] = $289             Savings/year: $ 81.46

Totals for the year:     [WAS: Big Insurer] =$1564.94       [IS:   New Big Insurer] Total =$985     Savings/Year $579.94
HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE
[WAS: Big Insurer] = $450           [IS:   New Big Insurer] = $286             Savings/year: $164.00

Also, we raised the amount of coverage and kept the same deductibles for all three vehicles and for our home!!!!!!

Thanks to your Financial Learning Experience at New Spring at the Greenville Campus, we are now paying

$743.94 LESS PER YEAR BABY!!!!

YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT     HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!
CAN’T SAY THANK YOU ENOUGH!   I WILL ALWAYS AND FOREVER SHOP AROUND FOR INSURANCE QUOTES IN THE FUTURE!
Thank you so very much!

How To Ruin Your Life Financially – Don’t Carry Health Insurance

I recently wrote about 17 ways to ruin your life financially.   Many of you shared some additional ways too – and they were great!

It is important that we circle back on a few of these because I am passionate about a few of these.   One of them is health insurance.

According to The American Journal of Medicine – more than 50% of all bankruptcies are due to medical bills.   In their report HERE, most of those who filed for bankruptcy were middle-class, well-educated homeowners.

Seriously, with a 100% mortality rate, the chances are pretty high that someone in your family will get ill.   If you do not have health insurance, you are positioning yourself to fail financially instead positioning yourself to prosper!

If you don’t have insurance, GET A QUOTE, find out the cost, and at least get major medical coverage!

Do you have any horror stories of not having health insurance?

I Can’t Afford To Save Money

I recently overheard another person saying, “I saved $100 at Kohl’s/Target/insert department store name here today.”

The statement should really be said this way:

“I saved $100 at Kohl’s by spending $200.”

Let me clearly understand this:   I saved money by spending?

If that is the case, I can’t afford to save money.

I Can Catch Up Later

One of the biggest lies that young people believe is:

“I can catch up later.”

A young person recently said this when referencing contributions to her 401(k).   She prefaced the statement with the two words “I’m young”.   Put those two phrases together:

“I’m young.   I can catch up later.”

What does it make you think of?   Does anyone have a story where they said this and later regretted the fact that they waited to start contributing to their retirement account, college fund, wedding fund, Christmas, vacation, property taxes, annual insurance premiums, or similar major expense?

All I could think of was that this person might be destined for a fine house like the one below.

How To Ruin Your Life – Financially

I had the honor and privilege of speaking at Revolution Church in Canton, GA again this weekend.   Amazing things are happening there!!!   They were in the middle of a teaching series called “How To Ruin Your Life”.   My message was focused on “How To Ruin Your Life FINANCIALLY”.

You can watch my message HERE in the next day or so, but I wanted to share my list of top ways you can RUIN your life financially.     Just in case it is your goal to ruin yourself financially (if you do, that’s weird and you should get that checked out!)

How To RUIN YOUR LIFE FINANCIALLY:

  1. Spend more than you make.
  2. Buy stuff you cannot afford.
  3. Ignore God – don’t ever return the tithe and don’t ever ask Him what He wants you to do with the rest
  4. Refuse to learn how to become a better money manager.
  5. Spend every dime you make – never save any money.
  6. Believe the lie that more money will solve your problems.
  7. Go to college for seven years to get a four year degree – even worse, don’t get the degree.
  8. Never plan your spending.
  9. Always say, Yes, to your children and spouse.
  10. Fail to work together with your spouse.   Even more, get a divorce.
  11. Have a bunch of children out of wedlock and owe child support to three baby mamas.
  12. Have all of your investments in one basket.
  13. Don’t have health insurance.
  14. Don’t pay your taxes.
  15. Start a business without any money and no plan.
  16. Co-sign a loan for a broke friend or family member.
  17. Marry someone who is irresponsible, has horrible credit, and piles of debt.

What would you add?
