IHHE RANT: This Won’t Work For Everyone

For the next few days, I’m going to be sharing a few of my IHHE (I Have Had Enough) Rants.

IHHE Rant: This Won’t Work For Everyone

I love traveling this nation helping people become financially free and fund their dreams. It is my calling. It is AWESOME when I hear people say that they have become debt-free. It is even MORE AWESOME when someone tells me that they have been able to fire themselves from their J.O.B. and go do that “one thing” that they have been called to do. YES!

BUT …   there is that occasional person who says, “This will not work for me. Living by a budget is too hard.” Hmmmmm. Let’s think through this. The person is so stone broke that they can’t two nickels to rub together. … but living by a budget is too hard.

I think living BROKE is too hard! The STRESS. The EMERGENCIES. The TEARS.

It is just not worth it.

I’ll take my budget and its financial freedom.

Can I get a witness?!

IHHE RANT: START TODAY!

For the next few days, I’m going to be sharing a few of my IHHE (I Have Had Enough) Rants.

IHHE Rant: Start Today!

I am praying and pleading that I have met the last person who will say to me, “If I get ____, then I will be able to go do what I really want to do with my life.”

Are you kidding me?   Life is too short to spend wishing and hoping.   If you KNOW that you are called to do something, then get started today!  You may not be able to do it full time right now, but you can at least do it part time and develop the skills necessary to take it to full time.

You want to start a business?   Start doing the work part-time right now!   You want to be a stay-at-home mom?   Make the financial decisions necessary to at least work one less hour per day or one day less per week.   You want to travel around the world? Start researching now on the Internet and save money to be prepared for the day that the dream WILL arrive!

STOP saying, “If I …”, and instead START saying, “I am …” or “I will…” or “When I…”!

You CAN do what you are called to do.   What can YOU do to get started toward it today?

IHHE RANT: Don’t Do As I Do! Do As I Say!

For the next few days, I’m going to be sharing a few of my IHHE (I Have Had Enough) Rants.

IHHE Rant: Don’t Do As I Do! Do As I Say!

Everyone has met that one person who tells everyone how they should do something or how they should live their lives, but then that same individual goes out and ignores all of their own teaching!

It’s the PE Teacher who is completely out of shape.  It’s the messy parent telling their kid to clean their room.  It’s the person who tells their family to stop their crazy spending even when they themselves are so broke that when they go to Kentucky Fried Chicken, they have to lick other people’s fingers!

It’s the proverbial hypocrite.  Of course, we all have been a hypocrite at one point in time of our life or another, but I’m talking about consistently making the statement, “Don’t do as I do.  Do as I say!”

  • Americans You want the country to have a balanced budget?  You want the National Debt to stop rising?   IT STARTS BY LIVING IT IN YOUR OWN LIFE!
  • Parents You want your children to prosper in life and manage their money well?   IT STARTS BY LIVING THE PRINCIPLES IN YOUR OWN LIFE!
  • Business Owners You want your business to prosper?   You want your employees to manage the business money well?   IT STARTS BY DOING THE SAME IN YOUR OWN LIFE!

I know I have more than enough times in my life where I have not lived out everything I say I value, but man I am SO GRATEFUL that my bride and I got on the same page financially and took the necessary (and tough) steps to achieve financial freedom.

And here’s the GREAT NEWS – You CAN do it too!   That’s why I’ve written all of the books and studies.   It’s why I’ve written like crazy on this website for the past five years.   It’s why we travel and teach over 50,000 people each year.   However we can help you, we want to do it!

How about making this the time that you say, “Do as I do. Because doing so set me free!

IHHE RANT: What Difference Does It Make Now?

For the next few days, I’m going to be sharing a few of my IHHE (I Have Had Enough) Rants.

IHHE Rant: What Difference Does It Make Now?

I routinely meet people who are so broke that they cannot see the forest because of the trees.

They can sit through an entire two-hour Financial Learning Experience where I teach the power of having a written plan for life and a written plan for their money. I have taught the enormous power of attacking debt with the Debt Freedom Date Calculation and using the debt snowball to eliminate it.

After all of this teaching, I still encounter people who say, “This can never work for me.   I’m beyond help.   What difference does it make now?”   Then they offer their reason (excuse) for why they can’t win with their money:

  • “I’m too old.”
  • “I’m too deep in debt.”
  • “I have no income.”
  • “I have too little income.”
  • “My spouse won’t participate.”
  • “I am stupid with money.”
  • “My parents didn’t teach me about money.”
  • “There’s no hope for me.”

Are you kidding me?   “What difference does it make now?”   Let me count some ways …

  • You’ll prove to yourself that you COULD do this!
  • You won’t have to eat Alpo during retirement!
  • You can help your children go to college and graduate debt-free!
  • You can use your past mistakes (and successes) to teach your children and grandchildren how to win with their money!
  • You won’t have to say, “Hi.   Welcome to Wal-Mart.” when you are 83 years young (unless you CHOOSE to)
  • You will develop a positive outlook on life – which leads to a longer, better, and more productive life
  • You will be able to leave an inheritance for your children and causes you really care about
  • You can position others to win with their money by leading the way!
  • Your ACTIONS will speak and teach way louder than any words you ever use.

What you do starting TODAY can make a major difference tomorrow!

QUESTION: What is ONE THING you can do today to make a difference tomorrow?

IHHE RANT: Get Fired Up!

For the next few days, I’m going to be sharing a few of my IHHE (I Have Had Enough) Rants.

IHHE Rant: Get Fired Up!

There are a lot of people in life who apparently believe that life is supposed to be perfect without any difficulties whatsoever.  They feel like since they want something, then it should just happen.  The moment that they are faced with a struggle or tussle or tough conversation or lack of funding, they give up and say, “It’s just not fair!”

I have news for that type of person – “Fair is where you ride rides.  Life is not fair.”

We all face challenges.  We all have less than stellar days when we want to give up, but at least we still have life!  It might not be easy to smile all of the time, but smiling is so much better than frowning.  Someone might tell us the word we all hate to hear – NO – but hearing NO might be the most important thing to hear at the moment.

Listen, if you can’t get fired up for what you do, go find something that DOES fire you up!  Life is way too short to just wander through it.  Being fired up doesn’t mean that you have to be loud and ridiculous about it (my preferred method), but it does mean that your work allows you to wake up every single day and say, “I can’t believe I get to do this!”

It’s time to get fired up!

Who’s fired up?  Tell me in the comments WHY you are fired up!

IHHE RANT: Get Fired Up!

It has been awhile since I have had an IHHE Rant (I Have Had Enough Rant) so pardon me while I rant for a few lines of prose.

“Boo Hoo Moments” versus “IHHE Moments”

Many of you are familiar with my use of “IHHE Moments” – I Have Had Enough Moments.

These are moments when you really have had enough, and things change.

However, I see a lot of people who are confused.   They believe that they have had an “IHHE Moment”, but really they have just had a “Boo Hoo Moment”.

Here are some examples of “Boo Hoo Moments”:

  • Cry over debt situation but continue to use the credit cards
  • Frustrated by poor credit but do not address old/bad debt
  • Sad that the bills are not being paid on time but they are not planning their spending
  • Sob about the broken down car but no money is in the savings account

These are “Boo Hoo Moments” – they are sad about the issues, but are not willing or do not know how to make the changes necessary.

I’ve heard it said this way:   “When the pain of same exceeds the pain of change – that’s when we change.”

Are you having “Boo Hoo Moments” in your life or “IHHE Moments”?

Guest Post: Why I Love IHHE Moments!

Note from Joe: I have had the privilege of training Travis to be a financial coach, and he is FIRED UP about helping people win with their money.   He is one of the most frequent commenters here on JosephSangl.com, so I asked him to share some of his story here on the wildly popular website.

Guest Post: Why I LOVE IHHE Moments (I Have Had Enough Moments)

Recently Joe asked me if I would like to write a guest post, I couldn’t wait for the chance.   In fact, I think my exact response was that I felt like a high school girl getting asked to a homecoming dance!

So that got me to thinking about what my favorite type of post.   I came to conclusion that my favorite is a good ole IHHE post.   Yes, that’s right, the I HAVE HAD ENOUGH post.   This seems weird because I am a very positive person.   So, what is the lure of the IHHE?     It is because it is at the IHHE Moment that things like priorities and resolve snap into crystal clear focus.     You might even say that it is when the “pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change”.   That moment, my friend, is when real life change will happen.

I have had two IHHE moments in my life.   The first was six years ago.   It came shortly after our washing machine had recently died, and we had put it and our furniture on buy now pay later terms and I was looking up information on taking out a home equity line of credit.   The home equity was for something that we just needed …   A vacation!   (from the stress of all our debts).   That is when Google pulled up Dave Ramsey.   (Before I knew about the wildly popular JoesephSangl.com).   That’s when it hit me, we make TOO much Money to be this broke!

My second IHHE moment came late in October 2010.   I was in a meeting when I started having chest pains and tightness in my arm.   It was enough that I left the meeting and went straight to emergency room.   You see, I have always been a big guy but over time my weight had just continued to climb unchecked. When you are 37 years old with a wife and two little girls that love you …   and your spending two days on the cardiac floor and the next youngest person is 80-something.   That’s time for a good old IHHE!

So where does that all leave me today?   I am proud to say that on the matters of money, we worked through over $30,000 of debt in 15 months of very hardcore scrimping and working.   That is now about four and a half years in the past and now we get to watch as our mortgage drops and our retirement saving increase.

I’m proud to say that matters of the second …   After much testing, my heart was given the all clear.   Ends up that it was stressed related.   That doesn’t matter because it was enough to have an IHHE moment.   As of this moment I have dropped 60 lb and registered for my first 5k walk/run next month with another planned in April.   I’m now gearing up for an oganized race!??   It blows my mind too!

To sum it all up…. I love a good IHHE moment because it leads to life change!

Have you ever had an IHHE moment where suddenly you realize that the pain of staying the same was worse that the pain of change?

Get FIRED UP!   Way to go Travis – can’t wait to hear about the result of the 5K and to hear you shout, “I’m DEBT-FREE – including the mortgage!”

IHHE Rant: It Is NOT An Income Issue

Pardon me while I rant for a moment …

I encounter numerous people who believe that their financial situation is solely an income issue.   In nearly every case, they are wrong.

For example, Eddy Curry is an NBA basketball player who has reportedly made $57,267,294 in his career and is being paid $11,276,863 this season alone.   He is in financial trouble.   According to THIS ARTICLE from the NY Daily News, Eddy has defaulted on a $570,000 loan with 85% interest.   Read that again.   A huge loan for 85% interest.

Call me crazy, but this is not the result of an income issue.

While Eddy’s situation is an extreme case, I know many people who make ordinary amounts of money who genuinely believe that the answer to their financial struggles is more money.

Two cases in point:

Individual lost job and is in the financial ditch

  • They worked for 20 years and managed to save up exactly $0.
  • They earned $25,000/year for 20 years – that is $500,000, yet they managed to save exactly $0.
  • I wonder what their situation would have been if they had saved up $10,000 or $20,000 of that money over that 20 year period
  • If one saved $19.23/week for 20 years, they would have $20,000 – with no interest growth!
  • CONCLUSION: NOT an income issue.   Definitely a planning/saving issue.
  • SOLUTION:   Make SAVING a top priority!

Individual makes good money, but has no extra money.

  • Their non-house debt load is $600/month in payments (car, student loan, credit card, and furniture)
  • If they eliminated the debt, it would equal about $800/month in a gross income pay raise!
  • That is $9,600/year
  • CONCLUSION:   NOT an income issue.   Definitely a planning/spending issue.
  • SOLUTION:   Plan every dime earned.   Refuse to sign up for more debt starting immediately.

Here is how to win with what you have:

  • PLAN every dime
  • GIVE some
  • SAVE some
  • INVEST some
  • SPEND some

I Have Had Enough Rant: I Can’t Do This!

If you have attended one of our Financial Learning Experiences or heard me speak somewhere, chances are pretty good that you have had heard me talk about IHHE Moments – I Have Had Enough Moments.

I Have Had Enough … of those who say, "I can't do this!"

I have spoken to or with tens of thousands of people regarding the topic of personal finances.  Without fail from every single event, I have received the phone call, e-mail, or comment that basically says this:

That is easy for you to say.  You have no debt.  You have income.  This will not work for me because of .

I have had enough!  I do not want to hear it anymore!  The FACT (regardless of how one feels about a situation) are that you CAN win with your money.  You CAN become debt-free.  You CAN save for retirement.  You CAN own a house some day.  You CAN pursue a dream.

To those who would say, "Joe, you have no debt."  I would respond by asking them if they have ever read my book, I Was Broke. Now I'm Not.?  I was up to my eyeballs in debt!  While I pursued debt freedom, my wife had to have not one, but two major surgeries with huge deductibles that we had to pay.  Since we have become debt-free, we have experienced to more surgeries, two failed heat pumps, a fixer-upper house, a failed transmission, and many other expenses.  If we could endure this and become debt-free, so can you!

To those who would say, "Joe, you have income."  This is true.  My hero, Dave Ramsey, has said it many times.  There is a good place to go when you are broke – to work – it is a sure-fired moneymaking scheme!  I have always worked.  Always.  I might even be called a workaholic, but the fact is that I will not accept unemployment.  I have spent the time and money to obtain an undergraduate degree.  Once I earned a job in the workplace, I spent the time and money to obtain a graduate degree – all while working a full-time job, being a husband, and becoming a father for the first time.  But I will tell you that I have worked jobs that were horrible too.  I have cleaned confinement hog buildings and "maintained" the hogs (no further details here – but it was awful) – all for minimum wage.  I have cleaned horse stalls and green broke race horses.  I was trampled by one, stepped on a nail while climbing the fence, and scooped horse dung all day long – for a few cents more than minimum wage.  I worked at Taco Bell.  I worked in a smoking hot steel mill.  If I could do this, so can you!

You CAN do this!  No matter what your doubters say.  No matter what your family says.  No matter the frustrations of accomplishing it.

STOP saying you CAN'T do it, and START saying that you WILL do it.
