Funny, Smart, or Reality or All Three?

A member of the IWBNIN team sent me the below cartoon by Jeff Stahler the other day.

It made me think …   Is this FUNNY, SMART, or REALITY? or all three?

  • If you have just graduated college and financed all of it, moving back in with the parents (no matter how frustrating for both parents and child) can be a brilliant financial move – SMART!
  • If you have just graduated college and could not land a job because there are none available because of the economy, then this is a fact of life – REALITY.
  • If you have just graduated with a degree in underwater basket-weaving and loads of debt, you had no chance of landing a job in the first place – REALITY.
  • If this is just a tough situation, we might as well make it FUNNY to keep from crying.

This is a reality for many and I would like to offer some advice to those who are in a position to have your grown children move back home. Have a frank discussion about what there responsibilities should be, what is expected of them in the home, both financially and in housekeeping duties, etc. Be as open and honest with one another so that resentments don’t grow. Although it is temtpting to want to cook for them and take care of them, especially if they have have been “away” at college it is best to let them be as self reliant as is possible. DO NOT treat them as if they are kids and they are less likely to act like kids. When expectations are clarified thoroughly then you can expect for them to be met.
