“You Pick ‘Em” Mutual Fund Game

It is time to introduce a new fun contest here at JoeSangl.com!

Introducing the "You Pick 'Em" Mutual Fund Game.

Here is how it will work.

You choose a mutual fund that you think will deliver the best return from May 1 to May 31.  Submit your mutual fund choice by leaving a comment below with your mutual fund name AND its ticker symbol.  At the start of the month, I will summarize all of the guesses and provide a weekly update on performance.

Winner at the end of the month gets a very cool prize pack:

The goal of this contest is to help expose the readers of this blog to the different mutual fund choices that are out there.

Submission deadline is April 30, 2008 at 11:59PM.  One submission per person, and it must be a mutual fund NOT an individual stock. I reserve the right to change all rules.  Smile

Man, this is a tough one because you almost have to take a gamble with sector funds which I don’t follow.

I’m going to go with BACAX.

I know attention spans are short, but maybe a better way to do this would to be look at a one year balanced portfolio beginning 5/1 and ending 4/30 next year? And that’s even too short. But that’s the strategy we need to be learning.

    Sangl Says …

CHRIS: You are right on the long-term approach, but my main aim here is to expose people to a bunch of different mutual funds.

I will make sure I repeat early and often the importance of a buy-and-hold strategy!

  13. Christie Ellison on April 17, 2008 at 1:07 pm

I chose Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM
I am looking forward to a little competition.

  14. Todd on April 18, 2008 at 3:52 pm

I’m with Chris: this isn’t really a way to invest. Regardless of that fact I’m going to go with a contrarian choice of all things, an equity income fund! (I know, that’s just crazy talk). Oakmark Equity Income (OAKBX). It may not win but it should be looked at as a longer term investment!

  15. wayne on April 20, 2008 at 10:24 am

I choose Jennison Natural Resource (PGNAX). It seems to have a great 3 year return. Good luck everyone.

  16. Eddie on April 21, 2008 at 5:57 am

Joe, let’s guess- Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund VTSMX

  17. Christie Ellison on April 21, 2008 at 7:43 am

John Michael (my husband) said that I chose a stock not a mutal fund. So I am changing mine to a mutual fund: T.Rowe Price Income (PRFDX). I hope I got it right this time. I am still learning about mutual funds.

  18. Mark on April 21, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Put me down for Fidelity Independence(FDFFX)

  19. Judy on April 24, 2008 at 2:21 pm

Try this one: China Bear 2X Fund DXHSX

  20. David Nanney on April 26, 2008 at 10:52 am

    I pick VGEQX

  21. Andy on April 28, 2008 at 12:36 pm

I’m going w/ CGM Focus (CGMFX).

  22. Toni on April 30, 2008 at 7:52 am

    I pick – VGPMX

  23. Jonathan on April 30, 2008 at 1:05 pm

My vote is FRESX. This is a short term play. If this contest were going for the long term I would recommend SMIFX. I’ve been particularly impressed with Sound Mind Investing’s newsletter (and their funds) for many years.

    Hi Joe,
My mutual fund guess will be Aim Constellation Fund, Class A. Thanks for all your help. You are fantastic.
