Build The Wall – Part 1 What is the wall?
The WALL represents SAVINGS. It is a wall built between you and the things that life will throw at you.
Look at the picture below. The WALL provides protection from the things that we KNOW that life will throw at us!
If you do not have a wall of savings built up, things look like the below picture. Can you say “impending disaster”?!?!
Think about it. If you have no savings, you CAN NOT PROSPER! You will always be in a position where you will have to turn to debt. The car will break down. The refrigerator and stove will stop working. With a 100-percent mortality rate in American, someone will get sick. A job layoff could happen tomorrow. History has shown us that more than one unplanned baby has shown up on the scene! Eventually, your roof will leak.
If you already have a wall, it is time for an inspection to ensure that it is built high enough!
If you do not have a wall, TODAY is the day for you to begin building it! Not tomorrow – TODAY!

Our family is a testiment to this post. Just last week our heat pump went out. We just purchased our home in November of 2007 and it had just been built (brand spanking new!) Who would have thought that we would be replacing a compressor in just a little over three years??? Yes, the compressor was under warranty, but not the parts and labor. We were quoted between $500 – $700 for parts and labor. We had our compressor replaced on Friday and are awaiting the bill. Three days later I am stranded in Wades parking lot with a dead car battery (another unexpected expense). The very next day, after having replaced the car battery, I heard a loud pop while driving home from work, my steering would not work and my car began to run hot. My serpentine belt(not a mechanic so I hope I got that right) had broken. Another unexpected expense! When I got home that evening, guess what awaited me in the mail???…..car taxes of $187.00 for my husband’s car! Add it up and all together, just last week over $1000 in expenses that were totally unexpected, with the exception of car taxes which of course always seem to come as a surprise even though we know to expect them. I had attended your “I was broke, now I’m not” seminar at the New Spring, Greenville Campus last year and guess what? We had the money in savings to pay all of the bills above! Yep…..it hurt to give it away, but it would have hurt much, much worse if we hadn’t been prepared! “BUILD THE WALL” people! You just never know when you are going to need that wall of protection! Good Job Susan! I have been trying to build my wall for nearly a year now… We haven’t had anything quite that major come up (mostly because my husband used to be a diesel mechanic and can fix a lot of car problems). But we have had so many minor things come up over the course of building that wall, we can’t seem to get it built very high! But it has still been enough to take the pressure off for these small things that would have added up to major debt by now! 😀
Joe, Your timing is perfect! I was just mulling this over for the past few days. We have an emergency fund but not a wall. I was trying to remember how many months you had suggested that we save after the emergency fund is in place, I believe it was 3 or 4 months of income for the unknown future. So now we are starting to build on that wall. Thanks for reminding us of some of the basic things you taught us so long ago. It never gets old!! 🙂
